What to Expect After Dermal Fillers: A 7-Day Guide

Dermal fillers have become one of the most popular non-surgical ways to restore facial volume, smooth lines, and refresh your look. At Skin Ritual, we specialize exclusively in Juvederm®, Restylane®, and RHA® fillers—three trusted brands renowned for natural-looking results. Whether you’re enhancing your cheeks, plumping your lips, or softening folds, it’s helpful to know what recovery looks like day by day.

Our 7-day guide will walk you through everything you can expect after your appointment, plus simple tips to make the healing process smoother and more comfortable.

What Happens Right After Your Filler Appointment?

Before diving into the daily timeline, let’s briefly cover what happens immediately after your filler injections:

  • Mild swelling and redness appear at the injection sites.
  • Some tenderness or firmness may develop in the treated areas.
  • Small pinpoint bruises are common.
  • You might feel a slight “fullness” sensation as the gel settles.

These reactions are completely normal and typically resolve within the first week. Most clients can return to work or daily activities the same day.

Day 1: Immediate Aftercare and First 24 Hours

On day one, you’ll notice the most pronounced swelling and possibly redness around the injection sites. Lips, in particular, can look larger than you anticipated—this is simply the combination of filler volume and initial swelling.

Tips for Day 1 Care:

  • Apply a cold compress (wrapped in a clean cloth) in short intervals to help reduce swelling.
  • Sleep with your head elevated using an extra pillow to limit fluid accumulation.
  • Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the treated areas.
  • Refrain from strenuous exercise, alcohol, or excessive salt, which can all worsen swelling.
  • If you experience mild discomfort, acetaminophen (Tylenol) is generally recommended over ibuprofen, which can increase bruising.

Remember, the first 24 hours are when most swelling and redness occur, so plan any social events accordingly.

Day 2–3: Swelling Peaks, Bruising May Appear

By the second or third day, you may see:

  • Swelling reaching its peak, especially if you treated the lips or midface.
  • Bruises becoming more visible as they rise to the surface.
  • Tenderness that feels similar to a mild bruise.

While it can be unsettling to see uneven swelling or bruising, this is part of the normal healing process. If you had filler in more dynamic areas—like the nasolabial folds or around the mouth—it’s common to notice a feeling of firmness or slight lumpiness that will soften over time.

Tips for Day 2–3 Care:

  • Continue gentle icing as needed.
  • Stay hydrated and eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants.
  • Avoid saunas, hot tubs, and prolonged sun exposure.
  • Use gentle skincare products—no exfoliants, retinoids, or acids.

If you have bruises, you can start using concealer or tinted sunscreen to camouflage them.

Day 4–5: Bruising and Swelling Start to Subside

Around day four or five, you’ll likely notice a big improvement. Swelling will begin to diminish, and bruising will fade from darker purple or blue to a lighter yellow or green.

What You May Feel:

  • Slight firmness or “fullness,” especially in areas with thicker filler placement.
  • Minor residual tenderness when pressing on treated spots.
  • Improved skin smoothness and contour as filler settles.

Tips for Day 4–5 Care:

  • Keep up with sun protection—SPF 30 or higher is crucial.
  • Avoid facials, dental procedures, or massages near treated areas.
  • Continue sleeping with your head slightly elevated if swelling persists.
  • If you feel any lumps, resist the urge to massage them yourself. Most small bumps resolve spontaneously within a few weeks.

By day five, many patients feel comfortable resuming most normal activities, including light exercise.

Day 6–7: Nearing the Final Result

By the end of your first week, you’ll see a more settled appearance:

  • Swelling is minimal or gone.
  • Bruises, if present, are nearly healed.
  • Treated areas look softer and more natural.

Keep in mind that while you’ll look significantly better by day seven, the filler is still integrating into your tissue. Juvederm®, Restylane®, and RHA® are formulated to draw in hydration over time, so your final result can continue refining for 2–4 weeks.

Tips for Day 6–7 Care:

  • Resume your usual skincare routine, but continue avoiding aggressive treatments or devices over filler areas.
  • Keep wearing SPF and protecting your skin.
  • If you have any concerns—such as persistent lumps, unevenness, or unusual discomfort—schedule a follow-up with your provider.

Beyond One Week: When Will I See the Final Results?

While you’ll notice a visible improvement by the end of week one, optimal results typically appear around 2–3 weeks post-treatment. This is when:

  • Any residual swelling is fully resolved.
  • Filler has integrated smoothly.
  • The final contour is visible.

This is also the perfect time for a touch-up appointment if needed. Some clients prefer minor adjustments to fine-tune symmetry or volume.

When to Call Your Provider

Although most side effects are mild and temporary, you should contact Skin Ritual right away if you experience:

  • Severe or worsening pain.
  • Skin discoloration that looks dusky or white.
  • Blistering or unusual warmth.
  • Significant asymmetry that doesn’t improve with time.

These could be signs of vascular compromise or infection and require prompt medical attention.

Tips to Get the Best Results from Your Fillers

A smooth recovery is only part of the process—how you care for your skin and body will also influence your results. Here are a few bonus tips:

  • Stay Hydrated: Fillers attract water to plump the skin. Drinking plenty of water helps maintain this effect.
  • Avoid Smoking: Nicotine restricts circulation and can shorten the lifespan of your filler.
  • Use a Gentle Cleanser: Skip harsh scrubs or exfoliants for the first week.
  • Plan Treatments Carefully: If you have an important event, schedule fillers at least 2–3 weeks in advance.
  • Book Follow-Up Appointments: Checking in allows your provider to ensure results are settling properly and make small adjustments if needed.
